In each of the five chapters that comprise the work a balance has had be struck between depth and breadth of treatment and the interests of brevity. Although the list of topics covered is by no means exhaustive, the list does include a chapter on classical, or exact, theories for the static response of single cables to various applied loads, together with a historical intro duction and applications of the theories. A little arch theory is also in cluded since the temptation proved too strong to resist. This paves the way for a chapter on the static response of single cables, the profiles of which are sufficiently flat for engineering approximations to be applied to the theory. The third chapter is devoted to an account of the dynamic response of cables. A lot of this work has direct structural applications. The fourth chapter deals with aspects of guyed masts, cable trusses, and suspension bridges. Three-dimensional surfaces, in the form of ten sion membranes of revolution, are then treated using the equilibrium theory with extensions to cover small elastic deformations. The remainder of this final chapter is devoted to an investigation, using appropriate engineering theories of the static and dynamic response of cable networks that cover regular plan forms. Numerous worked examples are presented throughout the chapters, and several of the exercises sets cover topics that could not be addressed in the main body of the book.
